News from the Special Interest Group
(June 2008) In its Board Meeting during the EARSeL Symposium in Istanbul, Turkey, the EARSeL Bureau accepts the proposal of holding the 2nd Workshop on Education and Training on 16 June 2009 in the framework of the 29th Symposium in Chania, Crete.
(10 October 2007) The first workshop of the Special Interest Group is scheduled to be held on 5 June 2008 at the Technical University of Istanbul, in the framework of the EARSeL Symposium 2008. The second workshop shall be hosted by the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute in Chania, Crete, together with the EARSeL Symposium 2009.
(1 August 2007) Start of the project Science Education through Earth Observation for High Schools (SEOS), funded by the European Commission in its 6th Framework Programme.
(18 January 2007) In his meeting at UNESCO, Paris, the EARSeL Bureau supports Rainer Reuter's proposal for establishing a new SIG on Education and Training. The proposal is approved by the EARSeL Council in its meeting at ESA on 19 January 2007.
SEOS is an initiative for using remote sensing in science education curricula in high schools, funded under the 6th Framework Programme of the European Commission (EC). Eleven different partners from several European countries are working in cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA) and high school teachers. SEOS will produce e-learning modules for science students in high schools across Europe. Based on real examples, the modules will use remote sensing images and data to involve students in different aspects of current environmental research. The modules will demonstrate how information from satellites c an be directly relevant to everyday life conditions and emphasise the importance of awareness of the environment. They cover a broad range of topics, from daily weather data to long-term climatic conditions, landcover changes, marine pollution and environmental hazards, to name but a few. Connections between different topics are made clear, and links make it possible for teachers and students to follow their own route through the lessons, according to their own interests. During the two-year project period (01.08.2007 – 31.07.2009) the tutorials will be developed and tested in co-operation with several partner high schools.
The project covers many disciplines such as physics, biology, geography, mathematics and engineering, emphasising the interdisciplinary character of remote sensing. Students will learn to connect personal observations with global perspectives, and will thus gain an understanding of the techniques used to receive and interpret remote sensing data. In this way they will gain insight into the nature of scientific enquiry, and develop their investigative skills - key aims of modern science education. In the first instance the tutorials will be available in English, using educational principles that make them suitable for high school teachers and students. Following testing and review, the tutorials will be translated into other European languages.
Integrating earth observation into science education in high schools, provides students with a basis for using environmental monitoring techniques in their subsequent working life. For this reason the tutorials also meet the demands of training courses for the users of the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) services. UNESCO will use the SEOS training materials for educational purpose in selected developing countries, thus extending the benefits of this project to an even larger audience
